SNAP is the first line of defense against senior hunger and frees up funds for health care and housing. This is important because one way struggling seniors often meet rising health care and other costs is by cutting back on or skipping meals — coping strategies that can exacerbate existing health problems. SNAP improves the health and well-being of seniors by reducing the negative health impacts of food insecurity, including diabetes, hypertension and depression.

Studies have consistently documented high rates of obesity and tobacco use among individuals with serious mental illness. In recent years, Medicaid programs have enrolled individuals with serious mental illness into managed care plans, which are responsible for ensuring that their members receive preventive care. Despite the movement to managed care, not much is known about whether this population receives routine screening and follow-up care for common comorbid health conditions and health behaviors.

Public Housing Capital Needs Study Confirms Funding Levels Too Low to Address Long-Term Capital Need
On June 24th, HUD released the 2010 Public Housing Capital Needs Study. In general, the study shows that since the last capital needs study in 1998, federal appropriations have been too low to make significant progress at reducing the backlog of capital needs. The study also shows that ongoing accrual costs have increased by about 15 percent. These findings reinforce CLPHA’s call for additional capital investment in public housing through increased appropriations levels and new approaches to leverage private capital.

In December 2016, federal and state policymakers examined health and housing issues at a meeting convened in Washington, D.C., by the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) with support from The Commonwealth Fund. The goal of the meeting was to identify concrete policy recommendations and actionable steps to align health and housing programs to ensure that people with high service needs receive the housing and supportive services they need to become and stay healthy. This report summarizes their findings and recommendations
