Webinar Sep 12, 2023
This webinar will describe new research that shows children whose families participated in a program that helped them move from distressed neighborhoods to areas with lower rates of poverty experienced significant improvements in severe asthma episodes. Before moving, for every 100 children, there were approximately 88 severe asthma attacks per year. After moving, there were approximately 40 severe attacks per year, a reduction of more than 50%. The webinar will explore factors that help explain these changes in asthma, including the critical role of neighborhood-related stress, and describes...

Recently, several of the BUILD communities approached us with a seemingly straightforward question about how many housing inspectors other cities have to enforce their rental codes and protect residents from unsafe housing. They intended to use this information to better understand the role housing inspectors play within different communities, since they are often a major stakeholder in identifying and addressing building related issues that directly impact the health of residents (e.g., chronic asthma).

Research Dec 12, 2018
Indoor housing quality problems, which are commonly found in public housing, are associated with asthma. Prior research has found that adults living in assisted housing (either public housing or rental assistance) in Boston are more likely to report health problems, including asthma, than other Boston residents, even after controlling for socioeconomic factors.

Podcast
Josie Williams, Project Coordinator at the Greensboro Housing Coalition, joined the podcast to discuss a BUILD-funded project called “Collaborative Cottage Grove” that is fostering resident-led efforts to improve poor housing conditions that are leading to asthma-related emergency department visits in the Cottage Grove neighborhood of Greensboro, NC. Motivated by a desire to improve conditions in neighborhoods similar to the one she grew up in, and guided by resident voices, Williams is working with multi-sector partners to map asthma hospital visits and housing condition data to identify...

Case study Jul 12, 2018
In Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Housing Authority, Boston Public Health Commission, the city’s Inspectional Services Department, the Boston Foundation, and local universities and medical institutions have come together over the last decade-plus to address the intersection of health and housing. Motivated by a desire to improve the lives of Boston’s most vulnerable residents, these organizations began collaborating to address asthma and, more recently, to prioritize housing and health needs for pregnant women. By bridging anchor institutions, foundations, and city agencies around health...
