This introductory level course is for individuals interested in starting a community land trust, new staff or board members of existing CLTs or anyone interested in revisiting the fundamentals. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the nuts and bolts of creating and operating a community land trust: How are CLTs defined? What are their key characteristics? How are they structured and governed? How do they operate? How can you best communicate about CLTs to partners and allies? Come learn the answers to these questions and more!

 

Participants in this course will be able to:

  1. Identify the ownership, organizational and operational elements that make community land trust organizations unique;
  2. Consider the role of CLTs in different markets;
  3. Debunk common CLT myths; and 
  4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of subsidy retention, resale formulas, ground lease and stewardship.
