Building the Workforce for Tutoring: Emerging Options & Strategies

High-impact tutoring — defined as tutoring delivered to small groups of students who meet with a professionally trained tutor at least three times a week during school hours — has proven to be one of the most effective strategies for closing achievement gaps. Multiple rigorous studies, including several supported by Overdeck Family Foundation, have found that investments in high-impact tutoring generate sizable, positive impacts on student achievement, leading the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading to identify it as a “big bet” investment for accelerating equitable learning recovery in the wake of the pandemic. With the January release of the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores — commonly referred to as the “Nation’s Report Card” — revealing continued declines in reading achievement, smart investments in proven strategies like tutoring are critical to ensuring school success for children.
